Power of Subconscious Mind

Recently I got hold of a book titled, “How emotions are made, the secret life of the brain” by Lisa Feldman Barrett. The book is divided into 13 chapters and all are relevant for everyone but the chapter on the topic of emotions and illness caught my eye. When I was reading this book, interestingly the students of class 11 D had an assembly on the topic – ‘The power of the subconscious mind’. Though there was some difference in the approach and the content but one thing common was that brain controls lot many things. The writer in this chapter talks about Anxiety and Depression. A common person remains confused about whether depression is caused by anxiety or the other way round. Most of the time we come across the statement that you should think positively and that will change the course of the problem. But what/who controls the thoughts of a person? Lisa writes that anxiety is the prediction of the brain which causes it and depression is the result of many wrong predictions, meaning thereby that anxiety is because of future-related predictions by the brain while depression is due to the repeated failure of the predictions by the brain. The future causes anxiety and the past causes depression.  How the brain manages a human being, for this I would like to quote two examples. A doctor was very famous for his assessment and diagnosis. If he said that the patient would get cured 99.9% time it was correct. Once his fast friend fell sick and after a few days, he approached for his advice. After all the investigations, the doctor found that it was a terminal disease and the patient (his friend will not survive) but due to close proximity with the patient and the family he said that he would get cured. The patient had so much faith in his doctor friend’s diagnosis that his brain acted accordingly. To the utter surprise of the doctor, his patient friend got cured.

The second example is that of a person who was an amputee and still kept feeling the pain though his limb had been removed because the brain kept sending the signal of the pain.

I would like to reproduce the explanation of chronic pain from the chapter. When people experience ongoing pain without any damage to their body tissue, it is called chronic pain. A few well-known examples are Fibromyalgia, migraine headaches, and chronic back pain.

How and why do so many people experience ongoing pain when their bodies appear to have no physical damage? To answer that question, think about what would happen if your brain issued unnecessary predictions of pain and then ignored predictions to the contrary. You would generally experience pain for no discernible reason.

Though I would continue sharing my thoughts on this topic today I reproduce the work of my students of the abovementioned class as they presented it in the assembly.

Harsheen: Everything is within your power and your power is within you.

Shruti: Isn't it funny how often we do things without even thinking? How we don't have to stress each and every brain cell when we breathe or walk?

Leaving this question to you, I invite Raghav on stage with the thought.

THOUGHT

RAGHAV: Whatever we plant in our subconscious mind and nourish it with repetition and emotion will become reality one day.

Shruti: So Harsheen, do you know what is the subconscious mind?

Harsheen: It is a part of your mind which controls 95% of our life. From picking up small details to making impressions about people. Intuition is a bridge between the subconscious and conscious mind.

Shruti: Yes, you are right. Such that it communicates through images, feelings and metaphors, focusing on emotion rather than logic.

To tell us more about the this we have Aayushmaan, Rajashree, Samidha, Charu and Preksha on the stage.

ARTICLE:

Aayushmaan - Do you know what is the biggest treasure of the world? There is a gold mine of infinite intelligence and boundless love. Most people are unaware of this treasure of the subconscious mind and live a life they find distasteful. A magnetised piece of steel can lift about 12 times its own weight but when demagnetized, it can’t even lift a feather. Similarly, there are 2 types of men. A Magnetized man is brimming with confidence and faith, whereas a demagnetized man has an irrational fear of opportunities. This man does not get very far. To move forward, we have to take that leap of faith. So become a magnetized man and discover your treasure.

Rajashree: Why is one man sad and another man happy? Why is one man fearful and anxious and another full of faith and confidence? We just make our mind, or I should say, subconscious mind, filled with affirmations like, 'Yes! I can do it!', ' I can get out of this situation!', ' I am making progress every day. The subconscious mind with Positive thoughts helps us to believe in ourselves so that we can be productive each day. You will find a way out because you made your brain work in that manner, but, on the other hand, if you make affirmations like, 'oh, I will never get of this, ' I can't do it ', ' what if I fail?', knowing or unknowingly, we are filling our subconscious mind with Negative thoughts and as we have heard many people say, you become what you think.

You are a gardener, and you are planting seeds (thoughts) in your subconscious mind all day long, based on your habitual thinking.

SAMIDHA: How to use your subconscious mind to remove fear?

Do the thing you are afraid to do. Say to yourself and mean it, "I am going to master this fear," and you will. Look at your fears; hold them up to the light of reason. Learn to laugh at your fears. Always remember, laughter is the best medicine. The things you fear do not really exist except as thoughts in your mind. Thoughts are creative. Think good and good follows. Fear is behind the suggestive amnesia that strikes during the exam period. Students can overcome this by affirming frequently, "I have a perfect memory for everything I need to know." At last, "take a deep breath" which is probably not what you want to hear but it works like a charm.

CHARU:

Scientists Use the Subconscious Mind

The scientists studying fossils and ancient ruins know that their subconscious mind has a memory of everything that has ever transpired. With their perception and the aid of their subconscious mind, they illuminate the darkness of the past and give us a description of a world that had no language.

Keen concentration and disciplined imagination of a scientist awakens the latent powers of his subconscious mind. To these scientists, the past becomes the present and the inanimate becomes animated. Through disciplined, controlled, and directed imagination, we can solve great mysteries.

PREKSHA:

How to use your subconscious mind for forgiveness?

The essential ingredient in the art of forgiveness is the willingness to forgive. If I tell you something wonderful about someone who has wronged you or been deceitful to you, you would be seething with anger; anger that is deeply rooted in your subconscious. In such a situation, quieten your mind, relax and wish for everyone’s happiness, health, peace and well-being. After a few days, you will find that the thought of the person or experience will be less frequent before fading into nothingness. Because as you sow in your subconscious mind so shall you reap in your body and environment.

Harsheen : The marvels of our subconscious mind are fascinating indeed.

Shruti: To show the power of our subconscious mind we present an enactment narrated by Divya and enacted by Yeshi, Kumkum and Himanshi.

Enactment

NARRATION

Your mind tells you that you will not be able to do something, are you really controlling your mind or…is it controlling you?

Well something similar happened while the Music Professor was getting her students ready for the upcoming concert, everything was good until one kid seemed to stutter… while her concert was in 3 days she was stammering. But why, are you ok? The Professor asked, and the student just said “I’m nervous because I don’t think I can do this, what if I mess up, what if.. I…. Let everyone down?”

The Professor understood her feelings, and she also very well knew the true potential that the student holds, the fact was her subconscious could not make her trust herself.

That’s when the professor told her, “The only one who thinks u can’t do it, is your own subconscious mind, subconsciousness is the mysterious power, which can either hold you back or push you forward”. With those words in her mind, she knew how to trust herself once again and had control over her subconsciousness that has been pricking her with the needle of negativity.

The day of the concert came and I must tell you she was AMAZING, the pride the professor felt and the contentment the girl felt which she thought she never would, were priceless.

Shruti: So Harsheen, it means we can use our conscious mind to reprogram our subconscious minds.

Harsheen: Yes, Shruti, we can harness the power of positive thinking to overcome negative thoughts and bad habits to achieve all our dreams.

Thank you and have a nice day

So, this was the content spoken in the assembly by my students and I would like to congratulate them for making me learn so many new things through their activities and assemblies. I am sure some of these students would become great writers and motivators to the needy ones in future. I also thank them for letting me integrate my thoughts with their thoughts and share that on my blog. God bless you, dear children.

  2. “Everything is in your power, your power is in you “This statement has hidden a gist of philosophy and innate power of a man. At times we call intuitions through which subconscious mind signal us about a future event. Compliments to the change makers (you and your students) of society for taking up complex but significant topic to make us aware about the influential positive thoughts.

  5. There couldn't be a better topic to research than on the above-mentioned topic. Human Brain has always been very fascinating and mysterious for me to study. The way students presented their thoughts is commendable and the boost of the confidence that your blog will give to them will definitely guide their thoughts in a promising direction. Waiting for more interesting discussions and write up on the power of the brain.

  6. The mind holds the key to our life. It's our own very thoughts which draws the events and people towards us. We are largely responsible for the things happening to us though at times they may appear random to us.

  7. Mind is an intriguing and perplexing entity. This topic has been captivating us from time immemorial. Subconscious mind is the decisive factor for all our actions and emotions. It controls all our physiological and emotional reactions, as well as is the main culprit behind all our preconceived notions about any person or thing. These opinions are based on our past encounters with that person. But what it forgets to understand is that people and situations change and grow, so to judge them based on our previous experiences would not be justified. Subconscious mind has been nurtured by an individual 's past experiences. So, one has to be cautious while dealing with other people as these preconceived thoughts may lead to judgemental reactions proving to be detrimental and unjust. Subconscious mind can definitely be trained through conscious efforts. As rightly mentioned by our dear students that it is a powerful force which can either hold one back or push one forward. So, basically a human being needs to come out of his comfort zone, change his ways and train his subconscious mind to think, act and stay positive in order to thrive and lead a contented life, adding value to the society.

  8. Very truly said in the above article, 'you become what you think' . What we think we become, what we feel we attract and what we imagine we create. Such articles always motivate us to be positive in our subconscious mind and to create something new .

    करनी है।
    ऐसे गम्भीर और मनोवैज्ञानिक विषय को सरल शब्दों में बताने हेतु आभार 🙏🙏

  11. It is absolutely true that in conscious mind we are aware of what we are doing. It doesn't involve any stored data. It is the current state of mind. It involves in right thinking. Subconscious mind always works in the background which we are not necessarily aware of it. It works as a memory bank. It reflects how we react in certain situation. So, one should be conscious to influence positively to the subconscious mind. Thanks Sir, for an enlighten topic.

  12. I completely acknowledge that this article do change the thinking patterns of an individual's mind. Training our subconscious brain is not something we do, it's something we practice. It takes real, consistent practice over time to see real, consistent results. Indeed an informative and useful article…. 👍

  13. It’s a beautiful article which will unquestionably change the way of perceiving the things.Actually the massive power of subconscious mind is unknown to many. It’s all our belief and the way we think things to be.

  14. Rightly said, what goes in our mind defines our world. Our subconscious mind which constantly keeps working behind the scenes holds infinite power. Reprogramming our brain helps us to condition and control our thoughts, actions and reactions which changes our outlook impacting everything we do and experience in life to achieve the desired results. Kudos to the young minds for depicting the power of subconcious mind in an interesting way through the assembly.

  15. Truly conveyed that brain controls and manages the human beings because we are all a reflection of what we think.
Beautifully put up by the students that Subconscious mind is a treasure which most of us are unaware of. We need to come out of our fears, take that leap of faith and become a magnetized individual.
A positive affirmation is all that is needed to realise the power of the Subconscious mind and work in that direction.
But, at times negativity surrounds us abundantly and then it becomes difficult to stay positively affirmed. It is here when the power of the Subconscious mind can be practised and desirable changes can be sought. Training the subconscious mind to see good in people and things around seems idealistic but a regular mindful practice can definitely lead us to that state!

  25. Kudos to all your students who gave their original views on the theme. Such activities promote sense of logic in the students.
It is said in YOGA SHIKSHA that "yadi aap aashankit hain to bhavishya kaal mein jee rahe hain; yadi aap dukhee hain to bhoot kaal mein jee rahe hain; yadi aap praffulit hain to vartmaan mein jee rahe hain.
We normally judge a person's action with our preconceived notions which are based on his / her past behaviour. It is advised by many not to carry the burden of past and rather judge him / or her afresh.
Youth however need to be warned that if you forget the history you are bound to repeat it. Some wise and kind people suggest that if someone cheats you - forgive and forget. I personally believe to fogive is fine but dont forget. If someone cheats me once its his / her fault but if he / she cheats me second time, its my fault - I am an emotional fool. So let us not carry the burden of the past but at the same time be aware of past behaviour of others.
I congratulate you for choosing such a variety of topics in your blogs. These are very thaught provoking.
